FAQs

  • Play Money is a membership community and platform for angel investing. You’ll learn about startup investing, see exciting companies to invest in, and meet some amazing people.

We want startup investing to feel more like book club and be something sustainable that fits into your lifestyle and schedule for years.

  • Play Money helps everyday angels build a diversified startup portfolio with an hour a week and just about any budget.

We’re changing the game with our:

    • Curated, weekly deal flow

    • Direct relationships to founders you invest in so they can include you in stakeholder updates. Plus, they get to access the expertise, connections, and clout you bring to the table

    • Q&A with founders while a deal is live

    • Networking features to connect with other next-gen angels (coming soon)

  • Each Thursday you will receive 1-3 deals, matched to your interests and investing style.

After that, investing with Play Money works like investing with any other angel group or syndicate.

You decide which companies to invest in and how much to invest. Investments are made through SPVs.

  • Yes.

While we set everything up to nudge you towards building a diverse portfolio, you control what companies to invest in, how much to invest, and how many companies to add each year.

  • Play Money curates pre-seed and seed-stage deals from the most inspiring emerging fund managers and elite angel groups. Data shows that newer smaller funds consistently outperform most larger more established brand name funds.

  • Founders cannot post deals directly to Play Money, and we are not supporting any “first check” deals on Play Money.

Each founder meets with our team first, goes through a vetting process, and must have their due diligence already complete.

If your company has already received investment from a professional VC, Angel, or Family Office, we’d love to connect.

  • Membership is 80/month.
We are waiving all membership fees through June 2024.

  • We use founder interviews to highlight key aspects of the deal designed to help you reach a quick investing decision.

All of our deals have been backed by a professional investor. These leads have conducted extensive diligence, which we transparently share whenever possible.

  • Yes, during the first week of a deal we take questions from the community and share the answers received back from the company.

  • Sydecar.io manages all the SPVs on Play Money. They are a trusted industry partner, and this is their core business. They have contingency plans in place not just if Play Money goes away but if they go away as well.

Additionally, all SPVs are Delaware LLCs, so "the system of record" of your ownership and information needed to contact you to pay out returns is not solely dependent on Play Money.

  • No.

This is standard 506(b) startup investing. You need to be an accredited investor, and the companies on the platform have been vetted and curated by professional and seasoned startup investors.

  • AngelList and Sydecar currently require a $1000 minimum investment.

We are trying out a $500 minimum. Play Money believes in building a diverse portfolio of 10-15 investments each year. And we want folks to be able to do that with the money they contribute to their IRA each year - because that is a budget every accredited investor can afford.

  • With your permission, we share your information with the founders after an investment closes so they can include you in their regular stakeholder updates. We have a bias towards founders who are great at monthly updates!

Additionally, we are experimenting with post-investment meet-and-greet Zoom calls between founders and Play Money angels.

  • We are founders ourselves, so we know how valuable this can be! We are working on a fun tool for founders to help them easily access the networks, expertise, and collective action of their Play Money angels. Stay tuned.

  • This is the part where we insert all the warnings about high risk and no guarantee of returns.

Startup investing is a long-term game. Don’t expect to see returns for 7-12 years.

  • We think Angel is the new book club. Or new fantasy football.

Existing groups can augment their deal flow with opportunities with Play Money.

When you have a deal you want to syndicate, we can help you target the best angels and fill your syndicate without having to do the cat-herding.

  • Absolutely. We’ll even host a special online welcome and onboarding meeting for your group — tailored to your level of investing experience.

  • You need to be an accredited investor to use Play Money.

Accredited investors meet one of the following criteria:

    • Net worth over $1 million, excluding primary residence (individually or with spouse or partner)

    • Income over $200,000 (individually) or $300,000 (with spouse or partner) in each of the prior two years, and reasonably expects the same for the current year
